Kuta

Kuta is Bali’s nightlife center. From Jimbaran campus its only 20 min driving and 5 min away to Seminyak area. You’ll be surprised what kuta has to offer, because Kuta has been the center of mainstream tourism since 1970, it has everything you need! Beach is in Jalan Raya Kuta, clubs, bars, restaurants are mainly located in Legian Street and Poppies & Benesari area is the accommodation center. And souvenirs are spread everywhere basically. Kuta has variety range of accommodation, from the high-end accommodation to budget accommodation. High-end accommodations are stretch along Kuta beach. Budget accommodations are everywhere in Poppies area and Benesari. Its backpacker area since a long time ago! Long short say, Kuta has everything, from expensive accommodation & restaurant to budget accommodation and restaurant. If you wanna try local food, there are a lot of option, Warung Malang is the best! Some students were staying in this area few years ago but not so many now, because accommodation price in Kuta is quite expensive compared to other areas. Nevertheless, a lot of nice accommodation with budget are still available. But its not the best option if you stay for 4 months or more especially when you come for studying, but it will be perfect if you want to stay for short time only, because its very noisy and crowded. Everyday thousands of tourist come and go from Kuta, the backpacker area. But, it always welcome to stay in Kuta for new experience. Don’t worry, not only nightlife and madness, Kuta offers white sandy beach, the best sunset spot and waves for surfer beginners, and of course this is best spot to meet travelers from worldwide. Nearest supermarket is Gelael in Jalan Raya Kuta (3 min from Kuta center/Legian Street), Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak (5 min away) and Carrefour in Sunset Road Street (10 min away). And if you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, its 20 min away by scooter, and its 40 min away from Udayana University in Denpasar.

Legian

Legian lies between Kuta and Seminyak. Its walkable to both, Kuta or Seminyak. From the map, you can see that Padma Beach (Legian area) is in between Kuta beach (Kuta area) and Double Six beach (Seminyak area). There are a lot of budget accommodation in Legian, thats why students like to stay in this area. Legian hold the second favourite location for accommodation by student option. Its less crowded compared to Kuta, but still in the center. Easy to recognise why, because only 3 min from Kuta nightlife and 20 min to Jimbaran campus and 3 min from hip Seminyak. There are a lot of option for food : Italian, international and local food from budget to expensive one, you can easily find them on the beach, Padma beach, its also good place to learn how to surf, you can find some local people to rent surfboard and as well as for the surf lesson. Padma beach is facing to the west, its always nice to catch sunset here too. Looking for supermarket? Just drive to Bintang Supermarket or Bali Deli in Seminyak, only 5 min away. You can also drive to Carrefour in Sunset Road with only 5 min away. If you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, its 20 min away, and its 40 min away from Udayana University in Denpasar.

Seminyak

Legian lies between Kuta and Seminyak. Its walkable to both, Kuta or Seminyak. Petitenget

Its only 3 minutes away from hip Seminyak and imagining your self surrounded by the best restaurants and upscale clubs in Bali? Yes you are in the right place, Petitenget is considered as upscale area in Bali. The restaurants are stretch along the beginning of Petitenget street from Seminyak intersection, lies Ultimo, Pepenero, T Junction, Kaizan, Mykonos, delicasy from around the world. For reasonable food, you can try try Warung Sulawesi, Warung Murah, Warung Eropa, Bali Good Deals for Fusion Indonesian delicacy. Warung Kolege-highly recommended by expatriates- is one of the great cheap lunch spots. Those restaurants are always favorite for students from many years too. And it has also Seminyak Square Shopping Center and dozen of boutiques along the streets. Kudeta, Potato Head, W Hotel are best spot for sunset drink and great DJ’s worldwide. For club try Mint, Hu’u Bar, Living Room and Mantra, music and drink are excellent. It has also one gym (some students were asking for recommended gym). Despite the party scene, this area is still considered quite compared to Kuta, you will be surprised what Petitenget has to offer, a few budget accommodations and of course dozen of villas with the best view. Its really nice place to stay, highly recommended! For grocery shopping, drive to Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak (5 min) or Sunset Point in Sunset Road (5 min) or Carrefour (10 min). If you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, its 30 min away by scooter, and its 30 min away from Udayana University in Denpasar.

Kerobokan

Kerobokan its a huge area. You need to check on the map where exactly part of Kerobokan area you like to stay. Basically, Kerobokan starts from Batubelig up to Umalas and Canggu then until border of Denpasar. Kerobokan still offers rice fields view and not too distance to the closest beach. This unique area has been home for expatriates and long-term tourist too, thats why lot of budget villas and apartment, so its highly recommended for student stay. There is no club in Kerobokan, only a very few bars which open only until 10pm and choise of restaurants is also not so bad altho its limited, therefore you need to drive 10-20 min to Seminyak and Kuta. But, Warung Sobat 2 is somewhere in Kerobokan always been favourite for the students. For grocery shopping, drive to Bintang Supermarket or Bali Deli in Seminyak or Sunset Point in Sunset Road or Carrefour. If you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, approximately 35 min away by scooter, and its 20 min away from Udayana University in Denpasar.

Batu Belig

Most people never heard about Batubelig. But rapid Bali’s development has reached this area and transformed it into “The New Seminyak”. New villas are built, restaurants, spas, bars and of course boutiques. All built with one reason, the beach is great to enjoy sunset and laid back area, not so touristic! You can even walk to the beach! A long Batubelig street, you will find best restaurants with VERY REASONABLE PRICE, try Warung Sobat & Warung Satya. For the best pork rib in town, try Naughty Nuri’s. These laid back restaurants are very famous for previous students and good place for dinner with friends. There are a few budget accomodations favorite for students since many years in this area becos somehow price is lower compared to Kuta, Seminyak or Petitenger. There are a few mini markets, and a traditional market for fresh vegetables and fruits. For grocery shopping, drive to Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak (7 min) or Sunset Point in Sunset Road (7 min) or Carrefour (15 min). What makes this area great is because its still located in the center because Batubelig lies next to Petitenget and Seminyak, 15 min to Hustle and bustle Kuta. If you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, its 30 min away by scooter, and its 30 min away from Udayana University in Denpasar.

Umalas

This laid back area is home for the expatriates. Surrounded by rice field, Umalas is still unspoiled. Place where birds are chirping and flying free. There are few hotels, but as far as you can see is villas. Yes, this is prime area for villa. If you are looking for a long stay place, then this is it. Perfect place to read your book and enjoy the real Bali. Students also likes this area to stay, easy to recognise why, because this area is quite, green, fresh air, less touristic, it has a lot of affordable restaurants, and close to the beach. There are a lot of affordable villas in this area where students are staying. For grocery shopping, drive to Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak (8 min) or Sunset Point in Sunset Road (5 min) or Carrefour (10 min), but a few mini market is just next door. Only 5 mins driving to the center of Seminyak and Petitenget, and 15 minutes to Kuta’s night life. Other areas are just still in range of driving. Umalas, a place you will never find back home! If you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, its 40 min away by scooter, and its 30 min away from Udayana University in Denpasar.

Canggu

Surfer paradise! Canggu beach, Echo beach, Karang Bolong beach are just in the corner. Wax your surfboard, paddle up and embrace the waves! Away from hustle and bustle Kuta, Canggu is surfer Paradise. And because of the surfing ‘invasion’ coming from all over the world, a lot of new ‘backpacker bungalows or surf camp’ build to accommodate the high demand on surfers request. Since last year, students staying in Canggu area too. There are plenty option, from villa until basic accommodation with beach view! Restaurant are spread along Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong with really good price. Heads up to Echo beach on sunday afternoon, enjoy great BBQ and life music! There are a few bar only, but for partying you need to drive to Seminyak or Kuta about 15-20 min. For grocery shopping, drive to Canggu Deli, Bintang Supermarket or Bali Deli in Seminyak or Sunset Point in Sunset Road or Carrefour. If you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, its 45 min – 1 hours away by scooter, and its 30 min away from Udayana University in Denpasar.

Jimbaran

Jimbaran is area of your campus, Udayana University Jimbaran campus. But don’t forget Udayana has 2 campus : Jimbaran and Denpasar. Don’t make any mistake! Jimbaran area to Denpasar area are separated 45 minutes away. SO, if your campus is Denpasar area, it means you need to drive around 45 min to 1 hour from Jimbaran, vice versa. Jimbaran lies on the neck of southern peninsula in Bali, side by side with Nusa Dua. It has a few nice beach but it has no club and only a few bars with probably open until 10 pm, few nice restaurants, and no shopping mall. Some students prefer to stay in Jimbaran because its only 5 min away from campus, but of course they need to drive 20-30 min for Kuta and Seminyak nightlife. For grocery shopping, try Nirmala Supermarket and Pepito.

Pecatu and Uluwatu

Uluwatu lies on the south east peninsula of Bali. A number of Bali’s very best beaches including Balangan, and the top surfing spots on the island, couple of times in a year, surfing competitions always held there. Dreamland, Balangan, Green Bowl, Suluban, Bingin, and many more! As a tourist destination, the whole Bukit Peninsula area was popularised by surfers. There are still numerous small & cheap bungalows close to the main surf points at Uluwatu, Padang-Padang, Bingin and Suluban, and many visitors just turn up and take what is available. Its not too far from Jimbaran campus for your study, only 10 – 15 min driving, if you wanna focus in surfing. BUT, only a very few students stayedcin this area. The area are rugged and dry, and pre-tourist development. Recently a lot number of small restaurant and “warung” are open serving western food with very reasonable price compared to Kuta. And no worries about party, Single Fin bar throws a party of “sunset to drop” with reggae bands, DJ’s and stuff. For grocery shopping, you need to drive to Jimbaran area. If you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, its 15 min away by scooter, and its 1 hour away from Udayana University in Denpasar.

Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua lies in south west peninsula in Bali, famous for the whitest sandy beach in Bali. Unfortunately the best white sandy beach are taken by big resorts, they are spread along the coast, but you can still enjoy the beach there. Dont forget to visit Geger Beach, perfect for sunbathing, swimming and it has perfect waves for surfing in certain months, you can always check. From Nusa Dua, its about 1 hour min to go to Seminyak, and 40 min to Kuta. There are are a few cheap accomodation, but so far there are no students staying here since the campus moved to Jimbaran last year. Nusa Dua is more like a family destination, not for students 😉 If you are studying in Udayana University in Jimbaran, its 10 min away by scooter, and its 1 hour away from Udayana University in Denpasar.


Don’t forget all range mentioned is driving by scooter. Driving with car can be double because of unpredictable traffic, don’t be surprised that traffic jam happens all the time!
